Smith, who plays Lloyd, is a seasoned rodeo veteran
Scenario
A Montana ranching family faces off against others who are encroaching on their land… Forry J. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to «forget» his Montana accent and reverts to the SoCal voice he usually uses.
Costner is a masterful actor as the lead Dutton
Featured in WatchMojo: Top 10 Summer TV Shows That Aren’t on Your Radar (2018). (Review is for the first two seasons only) I went into this show not expecting to like it, but the plot, acting, and cinematography are superb. It’s basically Montana mob wars with occasional giant doses of testosterone (cowboys with rifles on horseback while fishing)!
The show falls apart early in the second season, but picks itself back up again midway through
The show is at its best when it shows the chessboard moving the Duttons and their enemies participating in it. Kelsey Asbill is the weakest link as Monica and plays a bad hand badly, the plot is thrown out awkwardly, and the acting just misses the mark. I think Cole Houser as Rip might be the strongest acting (besides Costner himself), and I looked forward to every scene Rip was in.
Thomas Rainwater is great too
The plot is buzzing and the scenery is beautiful. Just as Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses was a bit more gritty and brutal than the title suggests, this show hits the mark in a similar vein. I highly recommend it, and I wish I hadn’t waited so long to watch it.
